About our School
Eastwood Elementary is one of six elementary schools in the city of New Castle, Indiana. The school is located in the eastern part of the community, slightly south of US 38. The school includes grades first through six, and serves approximately 300 students.
The school is a Title 1 school-wide provider and houses three self contained special needs programs for the New Castle Special Services Cooperative. Eastwood is also home to Kids Corner Preschool, a cooperative special needs pre-k learning program. Other special needs services include learning disabilities, mild disabilities, hearing impaired, communication disorder, and related services. Approximately one-third of the students have an individualized education plan and a few students have 504 plans.
Apporixmately 80% of students receive free or reduced lunch and textbook assistance. Eastwood was built in 1978 and all areas of the building are handicap accessible. The school operates a universal breakfast program.
The educational programs offered are comparable to those of other schools with the same demographics.
The school curriculum is consistent with the Indiana Academic Standards and follows the corporation coordinated pacing guides. New Castle Community Schools implements the 8 Step Process for Continuous School Improvement. Staff members recieve annual training in a balanced literacy which is implemented with fidelity.
A variety of after school programs are available to students that include: Homework Club, Track(5th and 6th grades), Math and Spell Bowl teams, Student Council, DIVE and more.
Eastwood is equipped with a 1:1 student to device ratio. First and second grade students are equipped with iPads, and third through sixth grade have Chromebooks and laptops. Further, all classrooms are equipped with projectors, phonic ear sound systems and document cameras.
