Principal's Message

Dear Sunnyside Families

Welcome to Sunnyside Elementary & Kindergarten Academy.  As the principal at Sunnyside, I promise that your child will learn in a loving and caring environment.  My goal is to maintain a positive attitude about learning while maintaining high expectations for all students regarding academic achievement and character.

Sunnyside Elementary is in its second year as a primary building as we begin the 2017-2018 school year.   Students in grades kindergarten through third will be housed at Sunnyside.  Students in grades four through six are now part of Eastwood Elementary.  Opportunities exist to partner with Eastwood in activities for students and families of both schools, as both schools are connected in serving the Sunnyside and Eastwood neighborhoods.

The Sunnyside faculty and staff provide instructional environments and activities that are best suited for your child’s needs.  As part of the New Castle Community School Corporation, your child takes part in Success Periods everyday.  The periods are designed to ensure that students have every opportunity to master state standards. Success periods also provide enrichment opportunities for students who have mastered grade level standards.  Aside from the customary grade level studies, students also participate in art, music, physical education, and library/computer time each week.  Sunnyside also participates in several STEM activities each year through the Reaching for Tomorrow program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America.

The Sunnyside Kindergarten Academy offers the opportunity for students from four different schools (Eastwood, Riley, Sunnyside & Westwood) to attend a full-day kindergarten program.  The kindergarten program includes a 90 minute literacy block, Success periods, music, art, and physical education classes.  Students also have the opportunity to participate in library activities that include computer literacy skills.

You can be assured that all Sunnyside staff are highly qualified. It is my goal, as principal,  that each student learn and grow in an environment that inspires them to read, study, and grow into skillful learners and responsible citizens. Thank you for allowing the instructional staff at Sunnyside to join with you in the educational journey of your child.  Great things happen when we come together and work together!

Sincerely,

Jean Ann McAllister, Principal
