Home Principal's Message

Principal's Welcome

Welcome to Parker Elementary School! My name is Bob Malloy, and as the principal, I would like to welcome you to Parker Elementary School and the 2010-2011 school year. We are looking forward to a great school year. There are many challenges ahead of us, but I have great expectations as we are blessed with a great staff, wonderful students, and supportive families.

Parker Elementary participates in the federally funded Title I program as a school-wide program. This means that because of our high percentage of children eligible for the free/reduced lunch program we are able to offer our Title I services throughout our school rather than just targeting a small portion of our student population. One way we do this is by offering full day kindergarten classes. We are currently designated as a school in need of improvement, because we failed to meet the necessary percentage of students passing the state mandated ISTEP+ assessment for two consecutive years as required by the federal mandate, No Child Left Behind. We are currently awaiting the final results of our Spring 2010 ISTEP+ to see if we made the requirements of Adequate Yearly Progress. While we will not know until late August or early September, we were pleased to see that our initial results showed improvement in both the language arts and math areas.

As we continue our improvement efforts, we will continue the implementation of the 8 Step Process of Instruction, which we began implementing during the second semester of the last school year. The 8 Step Process helps us to better focus on the needs of every student by improving the way we utilize our data in planning for instruction and meeting the needs of all students. We will also continue to improve student writing through the 6 +1 Traits for Writing process and making sure students have a better understanding of what is expected of them on the extended response and writing applications of ISTEP+.

I firmly believe that a child's success is best determined by positive cooperation and communication between the child's parents and the school. Parents, you are your child's first and primary teachers, and you will have the most significant impact on your child's life. Your attitude toward learning will be important in determining your child's success in school. While we will work hard to provide your child with the best learning opportunities we can, we must depend on you to work in partnership with us to be successful. This does not mean that we expect you to attend every school function, volunteer all your free time, or even agree with every thing we do at school. What it does mean is that you work to support your child's education by providing a positive model for your child to see the importance of school, the learning process, and hard work. This begins at home, where your child sees and hears you reading and wanting to learn. What you say and, more importantly, what you do makes a lasting impression on your child. Let us work together positively to provide our children with best learning opportunities.

Sincerely,

Bob Malloy, Principal
